China bans images of pigs on TV

BEIJING — China's national state-run television network has banned all images of pigs from advertisements to avoid offending Muslim minorities, according to a company official.

According to the Chinese lunar calendar, 2007 is the Year of the Pig. Across China, images of the animal are proliferating on billboards and in print advertisements as well as being used in promotional gifts in many shops. There are 18 million Muslims in China, according to official statistics.

China Central Television (CCTV) said it was keeping images and spoken references to pigs off the screen to avoid arousing ethnic tension.

"CCTV is a national television network ... Due to concern over ethnic and cultural habits, we will keep the pig image away from the screen," said a programme department official, who declined to give his name. "We do not want to cause unnecessary bad influence or hurt the feelings of ethnic groups."

Global food giant Nestle said it had been forced to scrap a plan to air a New Year TV advertisement featuring a smiling cartoon pig. "It [CCTV] explained that this is to show respect to Islam and was a guidance from the higher levels of the government," said Mr Thierry Vapperaeau, a spokesman for Nestle China. — AFP

Hey, the estimated distanced travelled today/yday is about 87-88. I counted 87km, my friend counted 88km. That means the entire west side of the country we cut away was roughly 30km. Hope you guys had fun. =p

omg i am so excited at tt plan of jianhui's. haha... last time used to love cycling. go to east coast park and cycle as fast as i can for 2 to 3 hours until my legs go soft. damn shiok feeling. even better if it rains.

but i leaving for malaysia on sunday. I hope it'll either happen this coming week or during december when i am back.

anyway i watched the movie "Cast Away" yesterday. Tom Hanks and Helen Hunt. It's damn nice.. somehow i find it very touching and inspiring. Those who think they are very lonely in this world or that nobody cares or feeling depressed, watch this movie and you'll think twice.

Fac outing. I heard Covenant totally sux. Only person to say nice was Eva. means confirm not nice alr. my 13 bucks. Urgh.

anw i will be gg to Beijing. Maybe i'll get something for the whole class... maybe only dun get hopes too high. lol. well well.

Vivocity quite big. All the hype abt it. actually no difference from other shopping centres. just tt its bigger. suntec is better cuz less crowded. lol. hate crowded areas. i cant believe i shopped with my mum the whole afternoon, without any complaints.

'Twas a good chalet. =p For those interested, I did a rough calculation of the distance we travelled that night. Should be around 38.115km. Not too bad since some of you claim you don't cycle too much. Anyone game for a trip around the island? =p Should be around 120km depending on the route taken and should be quite fun. =D

And, shounan owes me a martell. lol.

its quite weird blogging.

i havent really blogged for a long time, much less blogging on this particular blog. our class's. (or so called, cos it seems only certain ppl blog regularly on really interesting and random stuff.)

i had lots to say just now but when it comes down to actually typing out my thoughts, all the words just fly past me.

its nice to see that after fos and all, our class has really gotten much closer to each other. there is like a distinct huge clique, and the good thing is they're not cliquish, cos all the guys and the girls get along well. and im really happy to see that, because our class went thru this period of time where ppl were just daoing each other and all. today's chalet was a good example of class spirit.

then perhaps if u take a step back and look at the bigger picture again, you dont see me anymore.

its quite sad to know that when you've always wanted something so badly, you never get it. and when that desire slowly dies out, you get it when you dont want it anymore. busying myself with other stuff is a form of escaping reality, i guess. but i can never escape from our class, no matter how hard i try. can i?

What the Amish Are Teaching America

The rest of us can learn a lot from how the Amish community responded to last week's gruesome school shooting in Pennsylvania.

On Oct. 2, Charles Carl Roberts entered a one-room schoolhouse in the Amish community of Nickel Mines, Penn. He lined up 11 young girls from the class and shot them each at point blank range. The gruesome depths of this crime are hard for any community to grasp, but certainly for the Amish -- who live such a secluded and peaceful life, removed even from the everyday depictions of violence on TV. When the Amish were suddenly pierced by violence, how did they respond?

The evening of the shooting, Amish neighbors from the Nickel Mines community gathered to process their grief with each other and mental health counselors. As of that evening, three little girls were dead. Eight were hospitalized in critical condition. (One more girl has died since.) According to reports by counselors who attended the grief session, the Amish family members grappled with a number of questions: Do we send our kids to school tomorrow? What if they want to sleep in our beds tonight, is that OK? But one question they asked might surprise us outsiders. What, they wondered, can we do to help the family of the shooter? Plans were already underway for a horse-and-buggy caravan to visit Charles Carl Roberts' family with offers of food and condolences. The Amish, it seems, don't automatically translate their grieving into revenge. Rather, they believe in redemption.

Sudan man forced to 'marry' goat

A Sudanese man has been forced to take a goat as his "wife", after he was caught having sex with the animal.

The goat's owner, Mr Alifi, said he surprised the man with his goat and took him to a council of elders.

They ordered the man, Mr Tombe, to pay a dowry of 15,000 Sudanese dinars ($50) to Mr Alifi.

"We have given him the goat, and as far as we know they are still together," Mr Alifi said.

Mr Alifi, Hai Malakal in Upper Nile State, told the Juba Post newspaper that he heard a loud noise around midnight on 13 February and immediately rushed outside to find Mr Tombe with his goat.

"When I asked him: 'What are you doing there?', he fell off the back of the goat, so I captured and tied him up."

Mr Alifi then called elders to decide how to deal with the case.

"They said I should not take him to the police, but rather let him pay a dowry for my goat because he used it as his wife," Mr Alifi told the newspaper.
